Frequently Asked Questions

What are the working hours?

Normal working times in China are 40 hours per week. When exactly you will start and finish your work every day will depend on your company. This is a good question to ask during the interview.

Can I get take a holiday?

This depends on how long you are interning in Beijing for and your company’s policies. Usually it is not a problem to get some time off for traveling, however if this is important for you make sure you ask that question during the interview.

Will the internship in Beijing be paid?

Some internships in Beijing are paid and others are not. Payments however would be in form of a food or travel allowance as you are not allowed to earn a salary in China as an intern. It can be anything from one to a few thousand CNY per month. The longer you come to Beijing for, the more Mandarin you studied beforehand and the more experience you have, the better your chances to get a good allowance. However, as there is a lot of competition from applicants to do internships in Beijing many interesting companies choose to not offer compensation. If receiving an allowance is essential for you, please let us know and we can help you find an internship that does. However, please note that this will limit your choices, you will have to be more flexible on any other requirements for the internship and you might miss out on some interesting options.

Do I need to be able to speak Mandarin?

No, Mandarin is not required for doing an internship in Beijing. Fluent English language skills however are and all other languages are a bonus. However, some companies only consider applications from interns who do a Chinese course in Beijing before their internship. This is mainly to make sure that the intern had time to settle into China in a safe and supported environment and is ready to work when starting the internship instead of struggling to sort out daily life. This is quite important because during the first few weeks in Beijing a new arrival needs a lot of support in organizing life here, which is easily available at a Chinese school but not necessarily at a company. Many employers do not want their HR departments spending half their times helping newly arrived interns sort out daily life problems.

Should I book a Chinese course too?

It is definitely recommended, both by employers and us, to book a Chinese course however you do not have to. To start your stay in China with a Mandarin course will give you a smooth arrival experience, the opportunity to quickly meet other interns and students during class and the ability to learn the basics of the language for daily life. It is also possible to book Chinese classes during your internship, however, if possible we recommend to do a Chinese course at the beginning instead. Chinese is a lot easier than many people think and within a month of intensive study it is possible to reach a Chinese level where day to day life in Mandarin is no more problem.

What are the accommodation options?

You can stay in a homestay, shared apartment, serviced apartment or organize your own accommodation. Please have a look at our accommodation section for all of the options.

Can you definitely find an internship for me?

Yes, we can. Each applicant is different however we have more than 10 years of experience in organizing internships in China, a very wide network of partner companies and contacts. If we accept you into the program, this means we will definitely be able to organize an internship for you in Beijing.

What is important during the job interview?

As a participant of the LTL internship program you will skip the application queue and get an interview with the company straight away. However, during the interview the company will decide whether you are a good fit or not, so make sure you present yourself in a professional manner. Each company is different and if you have any specific questions regarding an upcoming interview with a company ask your internship advisor. Also make sure you ask a lot of questions during the interview. Only you can decide whether this internship is right for you or not, so get as much information as possible.

How can I apply?

Just send us a message through our contact form (link contact form) or an email to [email protected]. Let us know what you are looking for and we will have you signed up in no time. The more details regarding yourself and what you want you can give us the better. If you already have a CV, please email it to us too, however if you do not yet this is not a problem and we will help you with creating one.

Which industries do you offer internships in Beijing in?

Beijing has a very diverse economy and we can organize internships in sales, marketing, tech, law, medical, engineering, hospitality, translation, education, IT, import/export, sports and many other areas. This is the capital of the world’s largest country and Beijing is a very dynamic and young city with a lot of work options.
